A ground breaking ceremony marked the opening of a seven mile highway improvement program on Leesburg Pike between Tysons and Reston Avenue.
The major improvement will be to add an extra lane in each direction to better cope with commuter traffic generated by Reston, Ashburn and Leesburg.
The project will raise the bridge over Difficult Run for flood protection, and include improved paths for pedestrians and bicyclists. A pedestrian underpass will be constructed to connect with Colvin Mill Park.
The $320 million project is funded by federal, state, Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and Fairfax County money. It will begin this summer and will probably finish in 2024.
