Westbriar Elementary School Pedestrian Safety Upgrades

Those of you who have children attending Westbriar Elementary School are likely aware of ongoing school pedestrian safety issues. On the plus side, a crosswalk was added several months ago to help students from our neighborhood safely cross Old Courthouse Rd at Pine Valley Dr. VDOT previously rejected an option for a three-way stop sign safety at Pine Valley Dr at Westwood Dr due to the traffic flow, so the school is submitting a request for an additional crossing guard instead.

VDOT is also evaluating two options to improve “Kiss and Ride” egress issues.

The alternatives are:

• Eliminate the bike lane and create a right turn-only lane; or
• Eliminate the parking spaces directly in front of the school and add a buffered bike lane. If the buffered bike lane option is selected it would also help to improve visibility at the crosswalks
